On the 25th anniversary year of the first Eddie Aikau Memorial surfing contest, and for only the 8th time, the event is on today at Waimea Bay. Interestingly I was on Reserve duty the weekend after Edie Akau was lost at sea when the Hokulia overturned. We spent two days seaching for him in large swells. Think we all knew he was lost. Oh Edie would go, and he went. The moral of the story, if the boat overturns, stay with the boat and always carry a distress beacon no matter if you are trying to get in touch with nature.
